Nobody gets excited about the compressor. You get excited about the airbrush, and then you find out that the airbrush is a hollow tube that does nothing until something pushes air through it. The compressor is the half of the setup you will still be using in ten years, long after you have upgraded the brush twice, and it is the half most people buy blind.
The listings do not help. Every box shouts a maximum PSI figure that has almost nothing to do with the pressure you will actually paint at, and half of them use the same photograph. What matters is whether the thing holds a steady pressure while you spray, whether it stops when you stop, whether it dumps water into your basecoat, and whether it is quiet enough to run in the room you actually paint in.

Atomization, the process of breaking paint into a fine mist, depends on the air pressure being the same at the end of a pass as at the start. When pressure wobbles, the spray pattern wobbles with it and you get a stripe that is darker at one end. A tank also changes how the compressor sounds in a room. Tankless units run continuously while you spray. A tank model fills, clicks off and stays silent for a stretch, which in a small apartment in the evening is a different experience even when the peak noise is identical.
Duty Cycle, Heat and the Cooling Fan
Duty cycle is how long a compressor can run before it needs to rest. Small oil free piston units get hot, and heat is what kills them. Manufacturers answer this in two ways: a tank so the motor runs less, or a cooling fan so it survives running more. In practice, an hour of miniature painting is not a hard workload for any of these machines, because you spend more time mixing and masking than spraying. Priming a whole army in one go is a harder workload, and that is where a fan or a tank stops being marketing.
Auto Stop Is Worth More Than It Sounds
Auto stop means the compressor shuts off once it reaches its cut-out pressure and restarts when pressure drops. Sparmax lists the TC-501N as switching off at 60 PSI and back on at 40 PSI, and TIMBERTECH quotes 57 PSI off and 43 PSI on for the ABPST08. Without it, the motor runs the entire time the unit is switched on, including the twenty minutes you spend cleaning the cup and deciding on the next color. That is wear you did not need, heat you did not need, and noise your household did not need.
What the PSI Number on the Box Means
Very little on its own. Maximum pressure is what the compressor can reach with the airbrush closed, not what it delivers while you are spraying. The number that actually describes capacity is air flow, given as CFM or liters per minute, and that figure is what tells you whether the unit can keep up.
For scale, Iwata rates the Smart Jet Pro at 0.64 CFM at 20 PSI and Sparmax rates the TC-501N at 0.49 CFM. A single gravity feed airbrush at hobby pressures uses far less than either. This is why a modest compressor is genuinely enough, and why a 58 PSI headline tells you nothing useful.

Water Is the Failure Nobody Warns You About
Compressing air squeezes moisture out of it, and that moisture travels down the hose and lands on your model as a fat clear droplet in the middle of a finished basecoat. It happens most in summer, in humid rooms, and after the compressor has been running long enough to warm up.
